Stopping Kangaroos with the Right Fence

Are you fed up with kangaroos damaging your property? If you live in regional Victoria, you’ve probably dealt with this headache more times than you’d care to count.

The good news is, with the right exclusion fencing, you can limit and reduce the damage done to your fences, crops, and property. But first, let’s look at what exclusion fencing actually is.

Exclusion fencing is a purpose-built system that has been created to keep unwanted animals out - not just keep livestock in. Unlike a standard farm fence, exclusion fencing is both stronger, taller and made to withstand the pressure of wildlife trying to get under, over or even through it.

So, what makes an effective kangaroo fence? The best way to stop kangaroos is with a prefabricated mesh usually standing about 1.5m - 1.8 metres high. This height discourages most roos from trying to jump the fence while the tight mesh spacings at the bottom, prevent smaller pests from squeezing through. For extra protection, you can opt for an electric wire along the top or halfway up the fence to discourage kangaroos and livestock from leaning and rubbing up against the mesh extending the life of your fence. Another effective option is to include an apron at the base of the fence. This is a short section of mesh that either lays flat on the ground or is pegged into the soil, preventing animals from digging or pushing underneath.

Some important factors to consider are the terrain and soil type. Hills and uneven ground can change the way the fence sits and how effective it is at certain heights. Sandy or rocky soil can affect the stability of strainer posts and the depth that the stays need to go to make the fence effective. Regular maintenance is also essential to keep your fence working for years to come.
